Sığacık – Izmir

We were on our way back from Şirince and heard much about this town. It’s ancient name is Teos, an ancient Greek city and one of the twelve cities which formed the Ionian League. As we couldn’t find accomodation we didn’t stick around and after a short stroll through the town continued on to Çeşme.

To be honest, the town didn’t have much appeal for me. It was like much of the other popularised Aegean villages with templated touristic experiences on offer. I feel authenticity comes from the locals engaged in their everyday life processes. This is invariably lacking in mass market tourism where every ‘local’ is an entrepreneur of one type or another. In a small quaint village this destroys the entire feel of the place.
